Video Project Curriculum Outline

Grade Level: 9th-12th (High school)

Curriculum Project Theme: Superbowl Advertisement

 

General Description of the Curriculum Project: The students will be divided into groups to create an advertisement video that could be used for a commercial during the Superbowl. The students will view Superbowl advertisements as examples for their own. They will come up with something they want to advertise and the type of audience they want to address, and then write a script that will be able to convey their message in no more than 60 seconds.

 

Media Literacy Goals: The students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of the effectiveness of the presentation and treatment of ideas in media texts through their Superbowl advertisement videos. The students will view advertisements from previous Superbowl commercials and have a discussion about the effectiveness of each one. The students will demonstrate the ways in which their digital advertisement videos will address their intended purpose and audience.

  • MAHS1-1.2     Use a variety of media technologies, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas.

  • MAHS1-3.1     Demonstrate the ways in which a variety of media texts address their intended purpose and audience.

  • MAHS1-3.3     Demonstrate comprehension of the effectiveness of the presentation and treatment of ideas in media texts.

  • MAHS1-3.6     Analyze the manner in which the language, tone, and point of view used in media texts work to influence the meaning and interpretation of messages.

  • MAHS1-5.1     Describe ways that information from past and present culture has influenced the evolution of the media arts.

Detailed Description of Procedures:

Day One:

  • Introduction of lesson: discuss goal of the project

  • The students will view examples of Superbowl advertisements and have a discussion about the goal of the advertisement and the target audience

  • The teacher will divide the class into groups according to their personal skills and abilities with camera recording equipment and iMovie

  • The students will take the rest of the day to come up with an idea, how they’re going to advertise it, who the target audience is, and start their scripts

Day Two:

  • The students will continue working on their scripts and start checking out the video camera equipment for their group

Day Three:

  • The students will start shooting footage for their advertisements

Day Four:

  • The students will continue shooting footage for their advertisements and start uploading the footage into iMovie

Day Five:

  • The students will continue shooting footage (if needed) and start editing their videos in iMovie

Day Six:

  • The students will continue editing their videos in iMovie and start adding music or appropriate sound effects

Day Seven:

  • The students will finish up editing their videos in iMovie

  • The students who are ready will screen a first draft of their advertisement to the class

Day Eight:

  • Final screening of the students’ advertisements will be viewed and the teacher will lead a discussion about how effective the advertisements were for their intended purpose and audience

  • The students will fill out a self-evaluation for their work and their group’s work on their advertisements
